Press Release: Starts pilot with fill degree sensors in trash cans

VConsyst has partnered with Teneo IoT to launch a trial of fill rate sensors in trash cans. The sensors monitor bin fill levels and send notifications to an online dashboard. With this IoT solution, VConsyst is testing how data can contribute to a more efficient and effective use of waste bins for a tidy public environment.

In a rural municipality with a large land area, tests are being carried out to see whether the sensors also function in awkward places. And whether this data stream contributes to more efficient emptying and efficient deployment of scarce personnel thanks to route optimization. According to Ruud Visser, sales consultant at VConsyst, the data also helps to determine whether the waste bins are in the right place. The advantages are clear to Ruud: “Full bins can be emptied in time so that the living environment can remain free of waste. If the bins are not yet full, they do not need to be emptied. Especially in municipalities with a large surface area, a lot of time can be saved here.”

Long-range communication with LoRa
The fill rate sensor on trash cans monitors the extent to which a trash can is filled through the use of laser technology. Inou Heideman, commercial manager of Teneo IoT explains how the sensor works, “The sensor measures the distance to the trash and sends regular reports of this via the LoRaWAN network to a database. With LoRaWAN, data can be sent over distances of 3 to 45 kilometers. One gateway on a transmitter mast is often already able to cover an entire municipality with the signal.” In addition, LoRaWAN is also offered nationwide coverage by KPN. Through its use of the LoRa network, the filling degree sensor can run for several years on one battery thanks to its low power consumption. Placement of a filling degree sensor in a bin is also very easy.

Customer benefits
The test will take place over the next 3 months. Ruud Visser mainly expects to learn more about the reliability of data transfer as well as the consequences for cleaning services in terms of time commitment, sustainability and efficiency. “This is going to help us support customers with smart placement of bins and a much more efficient deployment of people and resources.”
